I know a lot of people are concerned about the environment, but not quite enough to go out of their way to do something about it. Recycling is relatively easy cause, well, there's two bins provided to you. And remembering to take those reusable bags to the shops is a bonus, but not something you'd turn around and go back for (maybe better, considering the fuel consumption).

But a friend's email recently alerted me to the fact that Synergy (Western Power) actually has a system so that you can pay a little extra (4.4c extra per unit, normally cost about 16c) to ensure that the equivalent of your power consumption is sourced from natural, renewable sources (solar, wind, hydro). You can read about it here.

They have a calculator too, and you can say you would like to ensure the equivalent of a 25%, 50%, 75% or 100% portion of your energy use is sourced from natural means. Stu and I signed up today online. You should too. It's really not that much more, and gives you a little more peace of mind :)

Considering my energy bill is something like $130 a month, that could end up being like $30-ish...
Not a figure that would make me back out of an arrangement like that, but what concerns me most is that it all sounds like something Synergy have put in place because they *have* to.
Australia and it's government are pretty notoriously non-green overall, and this movement sounds more like a government initiative or pure revenue raiser.

Synergy should be putting most of their profits into 'greenerising' their product regardless, surely?

All that said... I like the idea, and hadn't heard of it before. Thanks for that.
I'll put the suggestion to my housemates =)

Even if they only did it cause they *have* to... better to do it than not :P

And I don't think it's too much of a push to say that they could claim to 'green' their system by using an extra panel of solar every month. This system at least puts additional funds into securing renewable energy sources. With the amount of electricity we all generate, that should be a lot!
